Monsanto's Genetically Modified Corn: A Risk to Human Health?

Monsanto continues to bully us into planting and consuming its genetically modified (GM) products. The European Union has blocked France’s recent ban on Monsanto’s GM maize or Bt corn (MON810).  France had requested a ban on this crop due to health and environmental concerns. The EU agency responsible for the decision, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) stated, “Based on the documentation submitted by France, there is no specific scientific evidence in terms of risk to human and animal health or the environment”.

The United States is pressuring EU countries into accepting GM crops. Some of its diplomats actually work for Monsanto. To quote from an article in Wake Up World, “the United States ambassador to France, Craig Stapleton, stated back in 2007 that nations who did not accept Monsanto’s GMO crops will be ‘penalized’” – threatened with “military-styled trade wars.”

Just two weeks ago, Poland banned Bt corn after beekeepers showed that it was killing honeybees. Poland is the first country to formally acknowledge the link between the GM corn and Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) that is devastating bees worldwide. Monsanto may have known the danger their GM crops pose to bees because it recently purchased a CCD research firm, Beeologics which government agencies, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture, had been relying on for help in solving the mystery of the disappearance of bees.

Mobile Addict Parents Guilty of Child 'Neglect'

“Parents who constantly fiddle with mobile phones or iPads in front of their children … risk driving them to a lifelong dependency on screens… A generation of young people is growing up with a virtual addiction to computers, televisions and smartphones with striking similarities to alcoholism… By the time they turn seven, children born today will have spent the equivalent of an entire year of their lives watching some form of small screen.” The following article, by John Bingham, Social Affairs Editor, was published in The Telegraph on 22 May 2012.

Mobile Addict Parents Guilty of Child 'Neglect' Warns Psychologist

Parents who constantly fiddle with mobile phones or iPads in front of their children are guilty of “benign neglect” and risk driving them to a lifelong dependency on screens, a leading psychologist has warned.

A generation of young people is growing up with a virtual addiction to computers, televisions and smartphones with striking similarities to alcoholism, according to Dr Aric Sigman.

By the time they turn seven, children born today will have spent the equivalent of an entire year of their lives watching some form of small screen, he told an audience of doctors.

The effect could be long-term changes to children’s brain circuitry similar to those in other forms of dependency, he said.

Why iPads and iPhones are Not Kids' Toys

A New Zealand study revealed that even where schools ban phones, students send texts from within side-pockets; more than 20% carried one for more than 10 hours a day, and used it in-pocket.  This impressive ability to text without looking could well impair future fertility and/or reproductive integrity. Also very troubling is the trend of schools to provide each student with an iPad for learning.  Following is an edited version of an article that originally appeared in the November 2011 e-Newsletter of the Environmental Health Trust.

According to SodaHead.com, a discussion community with more than 10 million visitors a month, cellphones and iPads rank as the most-wanted items among youngsters, with 65% placing these devices at the top of their wish lists. Parents’ planning to succumb to the lobbying and get their kids’ the latest electronic gadgets would do well to ponder experts’ warnings before buying them. Would you give your child the keys to the car or a shot of whiskey just because she really wanted it?

Should you buy your baby her own cell phone with a handy drool-proof rattle casing that won’t break when it gets tossed to the ground or used as a pacifier? After all, cell phone prices have dropped, making them very accessible. “What harm could it do to youngsters to have such a cool, hot gadget—especially one with which they can learn to read, call the police, see movies, or just play Angry Birds? The answer is: plenty,” advises Environmental Health Trust founder Dr. Devra Davis.

Is Your Baby Computer-Savvy? 80 Percent Are!

Many articles have been published lately about very young children – even toddlers and babies – using new technologies:  iPads, SmartPhones, laptops … Here is one from Care2 by Judy Molland published on 17 March 2011.  Normally, one should not show the photographs accompanying these articles, but I am doing so to illustrate how the media presents these issues and to point out that this could incite mothers to embrace increased exposure of their kids to screens – and, if wireless, the dangerous radiation which goes with it – as well as potentially addictive behavior.

Is Your Baby Computer-Savvy ?  80 Percent Are!

Nearly 80% of children between the ages of 0 and 5 who use the Internet in the United States, do so on at least a weekly basis, according to a report released Monday from education non-profit organizations Joan Ganz Cooney Center and Sesame Workshop.

The report, which was assembled using data from seven recent studies, indicates that young children are increasingly consuming all types of digital media, in many cases consuming more than one type at once.

Are Alaska Airlines Flight Attendants Suffering the Effects of Nuclear Radiation Fallout from Fukushima?

Following is an article by Jonathan Benson that was published in NaturalNews.com on 16 May 2012 about a mysterious illness striking hundreds of Alaska Airlines flight attendants, causing rashes and hair loss.  Are “toxic uniforms” to blame or is it radiation from Fukushima?  It could well be radiation, because polar bears in the Beaufort Sea region north of Alaska are suffering from an illness with similar symptoms.  Ice seals and walruses in the Arctic started to sicken last summer from this “mysterious illness”.  No one is talking about this because “the public has been deliberately left in the dark the whole time about the true severity of Fukushima radiation.”

Mysterious illness strikes hundreds of flight attendants, causes rashes and hair loss - are 'toxic uniforms' really to blame or is it Fukushima?

Hundreds of Alaska Airlines flight attendants have filed a formal complaint about uniforms they suspect might be causing their skin to rash and develop lesions, and their hair to fall out. But based on the timing of the symptoms and their relation to similar symptoms in local marine life and polar bear populations, it appears as though radiation from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster may also be a potential culprit.

Mothers, Do Not Allow Your Toddlers to Play with Tablets and Other Wireless Toys!

Photo from article in 20 Minutes
The number of digital applications for babies and very young children is exploding.  Mothers are risking the health of their kids when they allow them to play with tablets and other "wireless toys" including cell phones.  "Radiation from these objects may lead to brain tumors, genetic damage, leukemia, headaches, anxiety, depression, attention span problems and sleep disorders.  Another concern is that almost all hard plastics, such as those found on a cell phone, contain bisphenol A (BPA).  In animal studies, BPA has been shown to lead to poor brain development, certain types of cancers and early puberty in females." (Text from Ehow, "What are the dangers of babies playing with cell phones?")

All classrooms in public schools in Angers, France, will be equipped with digital tablets. This is a first for Europe. In the canton of Vaud, Switzerland, this is not yet the case. The pedagogical director of public education explains that “in addition to the absence of political will, the use of tablets requires high-speed Wi-Fi connectivity and raises the problem of electrosmog.”  Following is a translation of "Gamins accros aux tablettes", published in the Swiss newspaper, 20 Minutes, on 16 May 2012, which raises the issue of children playing with tablets vs. traditional toys.

Dr. Annie Sasco Silenced After London Conference on Childhood Cancer

On 26 April 2012, Dr. Annie Sasco, Director, Epidemiology for Cancer Prevention, INSERM (Institut national de la santé et de la recherché médical, France) delivered a presentation at the Childhood Cancer 2012 conference in London under the topic, “What positive steps can be taken to reduce the risks of childhood cancer”.  When she returned to France, she was informed that she could not continue her teaching work at Segalen Bordeaux II University.  This may have been related to the fact that Dr. Sasco, who has 3 degrees from Harvard University and worked at the International Agency for Research on Cancer for 22 years, spoke up in the conference very clearly about the reasons for cancer and conflict of interests.  The conference was watched livestream on the internet internationally.

In her lecture, Dr. Sasco devoted at least 10 minutes to the risks of electromagnetic fields emitted by wireless technology, particularly cell phones.  Her lecture was delivered in session number 12 (see here for full program and access to all the lectures and discussions).  Her comments on conflict of interests in the panel discussion which followed are available at the end of the same session.  Following session 6, she commented on the study on aspartame causing cancer in animals by Dr. Morando Soffritti where she spoke up about the similarity between cancer findings in animals and humans. Following is my résumé of her presentation at the conference, in part verbatim and also based on her slides.  Thank you to Microwave Factor for this information.

The "Horror" of Industrially-Raised Chickens: Drugged with Medications and Killed at the Rate of 175 Per Minute

A study conducted jointly by the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future and Arizona State University, published in March 2012, in the journal Environmental Science and Technology, uncovered a slew of drugs (antibiotics, antihistamines, antidepressants) in the feather meal (leftover ground-down plumage), fed to commercially-raised poultry.  (See the New York Times article, “Arsenic in Our Chicken?” by Nicholas D. Kirstof, 4 April 2012.  Quotes from "Guess What Drugs and Illegal Substances are Showing up in Chicken", by Richard Schiffman, published by Care2 on 1 May 2012.)

A reader has kindly referred to the abstract of a February 2012 article published in The Science of the Total Environment.  Feathers from these chickens are also used as an animal feed additive and as an organic fertilizer.

The antiobiotic fluoroquinolone was banned by the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) for use in poultry production to stimulate growth, yet it showed up recently in 8 of the 12 samples of feather meal tested in the study.

Statin Controversy - UPDATED 18 May 2012

We are hearing more and more from health experts about harmful side effects of medications – certain painkillers, anti-inflammatory drugs, statins.  This article is being re-issued for a second time because there is more and more evidence that, among other serious side effects, statin-type cholersterol-lowering drugs, are associated with increased risk for type 2 diabetes and memory problems.  Statins are one of the biggest swindles that pharmaceutical companies have created.  They are being used widely in secondary prevention and even their effectiveness in primary prevention is being questioned.
UPDATE (7 July 2012):  An article published on 25 June 2012 in the Archives of Internal Medicine concludes:  Statin therapy is an effective intervention in the secondary prevention of cardiovascular events in both sexes, meaning, those who have already had a heart attack, but there is no benefit on stroke and all-cause mortality in women.   Click here for full article.

UPDATE (18 May 2012):  On 16 May 2012, the Television Suisse Romande (RTS) showed a documentary on statins as part of its health program "36.9". Worldwide, pharmaceutical companies earn $30 billion per year from the sale of statins. AstraZeneca, producer of Crestor, is the 5th largest pharmaceutical company in the world, representing total net sales of $33 billion per year, 17% of which is earned from statins. Originally developed for a specific cholesterol problem, diagnosed family hypercholesterolemia, these drugs are prescribed to millions more persons in the world: 20% of Americans take statins and 10% of Swiss. Insurance companies in Switzerland are paying out some $160,000 million per year for statin prescriptions without questioning their effectiveness or serious side effects.

Scientific and Citizen Forum on Radioprotection: Official Press Release and Abstracts of Presentations

Following is the Press Release from IndependentWHO on the Scientific and Citizen Forum on Radioprotection which took place in Geneva, 12-13 May 2012.   Please see:

The “Scientific and Citizen Forum on Radioprotection: from Chernobyl to Fukushima”, organised by the collective ‘IndependentWHO – for the independence of the World Health Organisation(WHO), took place in Geneva on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th May.

Saturday 12th May was devoted to presentations by Dr Eisuke Matsui, Kolin Kobayashi, Aya Marumori, Wataru Iwata and Miwa Chiwaki (Japon); Dr Galina Bandajevskaia, Alexei Nesterenko and Vladimir Babenko (Belarus); Alexei Yablokov (Russia), Dr Youri Bandajevsyky (Belarus – now in Ukraine), Chris Busby (United Kingdom), Paul Lannoye (Belgium), Dr Michel Fernex (Switzerland) and Dr Sophie Fauconnier, Paul Jobin, Roland Desbordes and Michèle Rivasi (France).

Scientific and Citizen Forum on Radioprotection, Geneva, Switzerland, 12 May 2012: Personal Reflections

The Scientific and Citizen Forum on Radioprotection held in Geneva, Switzerland, 12 May 2012, and attended by over 200 persons, invites reflection.  The forum was organized by IndependentWHO, a group of individuals and associations supported by a broad coalition of NGOs whose major concern is that the World Health Organization (WHO), through its alliance with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is unable to fulfill its constitutional mandate “to act as the directing and coordinating authority on international health work” and “to assist in developing an informed public opinion among all peoples on matters of health”, including in the area of radiation.  WHO has chosen to ignore the large body of research documenting the suffering of radiation victims from the fallout from nuclear weapons testing, the explosion of the reactors at Chernobyl and Fukushima and other accidents resulting from the use of depleted uranium weapons or “normal” emissions in water or air produced by the nuclear industry. (Résumés of the presentations and program are available here.)

The forum gathered together doctors, independent scientists, two members of the European Parliament (Paul Lannoye, member of the Commission on Health, Environment and Consumer Protection, and Michèle Rivasi, founder of the independent Committee for Research and Independent Information on Radioactivity, CRIIRAD, which is aiding the people of Fukushima), members of associations, and citizens, giving all an opportunity to share their knowledge and experience concerning the Chernobyl and Fukushima catastrophes.  The reasons for such a forum should never have existed.  There never should have been a Fukushima, Chernobyl, Hiroshima or Nagasaki.

"Sugar Nation": Reasons for the Epidemic of Diabetes in the United States

In other articles, we have seen the very high rates of type 2 diabetes in the United States.  Jeff O’Connell, the author of “Sugar Nation” (2010), “motivated by a personal quest to understand and manage his pre-diabetes” condition, has written a book exposing “one of the largest ‘crimes’ ever committed in the history of health, medicine and nutrition:  the blundering, profiteering, and counterproductive information that passes for advice from agencies like the American Diabetes Association and practicing physicians” in the treatment of diabetes.

O’Connell discusses the practices of the American Diabetes Association (ADA), which gives misleading advice regarding diet, focuses on research (investing some $450 million in over 4,000 projects since its inception), and accepts funding from the pharmaceutical companies which make diabetes medications and food companies such as Coca Cola and Kellogg’s which produce the sugary foods fueling the diabetes epidemic. He argues that the ADA encourages the taking of drugs as treatment because patients cannot or will not make the lifestyle changes required to control their diabetes.

A Tribute to Swiss Pediatrician Dr. Beat Richner for His Care of Children in Cambodia

Since 1991, Dr. Beat Richner, Swiss pediatrician, has set up five children’s “Kantha Bopha” hospitals and one maternity hospital in Cambodia’s major cities, including two in Phnom Penh and one in Siam Reap.  Over the last 20 years, one million seriously ill children have been treated in his hospitals and 10 million as out-patients.  Treatment is free of charge since 90% of the children come from families whose income is less than one dollar a day.  Most of the children are treated for Japanese encephalitis, malaria, dengue fever, thyroid and tuberculosis (TB) which is the number one killer in Cambodia.  The high TB rate is a direct consequence of the war.  The mortality rate in Dr. Richner’s treatment centers is very low – only 1%.

Stunning Actions Raise Awareness of Environmental Issues

We must praise the courage of persons who risk their well-being – and even arrest – to raise awareness of environmental issues concerning all of us. It is a sad comment on society that often it takes such daring actions as these to wake up the world. All these actions took place on the same day, 2 May 2012.

The value of water:   In order to sensitize the population to the inestimable value of water, Ernst Bromeis, a 44-year-old Swiss from canton Grisons began to swim the 1,230 kilometer (765 mile) length of the Rhine River from eastern Switzerland to its mouth at the North Sea near Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The journey, which began at 2,330 meters (7,642 feet) altitude in the frozen mountain lake of Toma, the source of the Rhine, is estimated to take 27 days. At times, Bromeis will have to walk beside the river due to its depth and obstacles (cascades and 30 locks).
UPDATE (15 May 2012):  After 15 days, Bromeis had to abandon his attempt to swim the length of the Rhine River due to severe weather conditions:  icy, heavy  rain and extreme cold.

IndependentWHO Organizes "Scientific and Citizen Forum on Radioprotection: from Chernobyl to Fukushima" in Geneva, Switzerland, 12 May 2012

The real health consequences of Chernobyl, and of all nuclear activities, have been covered up. The World Health Organization, the international health authority, is subordinate to the nuclear lobby and has abdicated all responsibility in matters of radiation and health.

With the Fukushima catastrophe, it is ever more urgent for citizens and independent scientists to assume responsibility together for research and information in this critical area of public health.  The Forum, organized by IndependentWHO in Geneva, will bring together independent scientists, citizens groups and health professionals, from the Chernobyl region, Fukushima and elsewhere in the world, in order to share information and initiate citizen action aimed at ensuring radioprotection for the world’s people.

There will be events on all three days of the forum :

Press Conference, Friday 11 May, 10.00 - 12.00, at Geneva Press Club, basement conference room, "La Pastorale", 106 route de Ferney, Geneva.   The Club has the pleasure of inviting Swiss and foreign journalists and its members on the theme of the Forum, with:
- Paul Roullaud, Co-Founder of IndependentWHO
- Alison Katz, member of People's Health Movement and IndependentWHO
- Wladimir Tchertkoff, author of Crimes de Tchernobyl and member IndependentWHO
-  Kolin Kobayashi, Journalist and Paris Correspondent, Days Japan.
In principle, open to the public.

The Forum, Saturday 12 May, from 9.00, at the Ecumenical Centre, 150 route de Ferney, Geneva.

A round table discussion between speakers and the public, Sunday morning, 13 May, 9.00 - 12.00, at La Maison des associations, 15 rue des Savoises, Geneva.

Strategies for Removing or Reducing Electromagnetic Field Radiation and Dirty Electricity

Protect yourself and your family by
reducing electropollution!

Following is part 2 of Helke Ferrie’s article on electropollution, “Creating a Healthy Home”, published in the April 2012 issue of Vitality Magazine, where she writes about protecting ourselves from this pollution. “The zapping of people and animals must stop… This invisible poison wrecks human brains, causes sperm to deteriorate, ovaries to malfunction, and fetuses to die. So, there goes the human race, and for what? For snazzy communication conveniences that could be made without genocidal side effects?” The article is reproduced here in full.

Creating a Healthy Home – Strategies for Removing or Reducing Dirty Electricity and EMF Radiation by Helke Ferrie

(Here is) what I hope to teach you about protection from electropollution that invades us all without our knowledge or consent. As promised last month: the answer to bad technology is good technology, and there is lots. Here are two compelling reasons to act on this information.

Firstly, the symptoms of electropollution-induced sickness involve all organs with many debilitating symptoms, from skin rashes to cancer; they are part of the Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) spectrum. In fact, Dr. William Rea of the American Academy for Environmental Medicine (AAEM) became EMF sensitive himself from the operating room lights used when he was still a surgeon. Today, treatment of EMF sensitivity is as much a part of the work and training of AAEM-trained doctors as is everything involving environmental chemical toxins. The symptoms of environmental illness provide potentially inexhaustible revenues for Big Pharma and related industries. Your personal descent into a nightmare – be it by cell phone or lawn pesticides – is a dream come true for a business that treats only symptoms, rarely causes. Recovering from encounters of the EMF kind is not only a personal achievement but can be a public service: you speak truth to the power of phony medicine that grows and profits by sickness.

News from Geneva: Massive Lay-Offs: Merck-Serono

Merck Serono staff participating in May 1st demonstration
On 24 April 2012, the biggest collective lay-off in the history of the canton of Geneva occurred involving all 1,250 employees of the biotechnology company Merck-Serono:  500 posts to be eliminated, 620 relocated to Darmstadt, Boston or Beijing at local salary conditions, and 130 moved to Aubonne in canton Vaud.  Behind these lay-offs lies a story of enormous sums of money reported by local newspapers, with little mention of the human costs of losing a job or relocating.

The President of Merck-Serono’s Administrative Council, François Naef, who was also the President of the Geneva Chamber of Commerce and Industry until his very recent resignation, explained, “If we wish to remain capable of attaining our objectives and continue to invest massively in research and development (which costs some 10 billion Swiss francs – US$11 billion – over 10 years) one of the main branches has to go.” Yet, the company recently raised its dividends by 20% for shareholders and in 2011, realized a net profit of 750 million Swiss francs (US$825 million), down 2% from 2010.  Merck, the German parent company, earned a total of 10.3 billion Euros (US$13.6 billion) in 2011.
