Famous Names Litter Radiation Death List

Famous Names Litter Radiation Death List
by Jack O'Dwyer, odwyerpr.com, 29April 2016

Ted Kennedy, Johnnie Cochran, Robert Novak, Tug McGraw, Bobbie Murcer, Pete Rozelle, Seve Ballesteros, are among the victims of brain cancer possibly caused by cellphone use.

The list of 300+ victims has been compiled by Ellie Marks, head of the California Brain Tumor Assn., whose husband, Alan, survived a brain tumor in 2008. He had been wedded to his cellphone for 20 years in conducting a real estate business.

Their son, Zack, was interning for Senator Ted Kennedy when he was diagnosed with brain cancer, succumbing in 2009.

One person we would add to the list is Marilyn Laurie, VP-PR of AT&T, who died of brain cancer in 2010. We queried AT&T PR staff about her cellphone use but never heard back.

Cellphone alarmists have been shouting their message for nearly ten years but are making little headway with the media, legislators or the general public.

"Cancer by the Carton", a December 1952 Reader's Digest article on the association between smoking and lung cancer, contributed to the largest drop in cigarette consumption since the Depression.

Cancer by the Carton

Recent medical researches on the relationship of smoking and lung cancer

For three decades the medical controversy over the part played by smoking in the rise of bronchiogenic carcinoma, better known as cancer of the lung, has largely been kept from public notice. More than 26 years ago the late Dr. James Ewing, distinguished pathologist and leading spirit in the organization of the American Association for Cancer Research (now the American Cancer Society), pleaded for a public educational campaign.

“One may hardly aim to eliminate the tobacco habit,” he wrote in his famous essay on cancer prevention, “but cancer propaganda should emphasize the danger signs that go with it.”

Do Screens Give You Headaches? This Town Without Wi-Fi Might Be Your Salvation
by Michael J. Gaynor, Reader's Digest, May 2016

A strange clash among locals, scientists, and techno-phobes has made this hamlet both a haven and a hell.

You can’t make a call or send a text on your cell phone in Green Bank, West Virginia. Wireless Internet is outlawed, as is Bluetooth. As you approach the tiny town on a two-lane road that snakes through the Allegheny Mountains, the bars on your cell phone fall like dominoes, and the scan function on the radio ceases to work. The rusted pay phone on the north side of town is the only way for a visitor to reach the rest of the world. It’s a premodern place by design,
devoid of the gadgets and technologies that define life today.

Canada: Letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about Dangers of Wi-Fi in Schools

(Choice of image by Editor of
"Towards Better Health")
Letter to the Prime Minister of Canada
Posted on the Facebook page of Coalition to Stop Smart Meters on 28 April 2016

Below is a very important letter written to the Prime Minister about the dangers of having wifi in schools by a very courageous and dedicated teacher.
(The attachments referred to in this letter have been put on to the CST website and links are provided below the letter.)

Dear Prime Minister Trudeau,

My name is xxxxx. I am teacher in Edmonton, Alberta, and am a Canadian Teacher who is extremely thankful for the information that Jerry Flynn shared with you in his e-mail of 4/14/16 about the serious health (and security) risks that wireless radiation is posing to Canadian citizens, and in particular, to children in school. I spearhead Alberta Safe Schools, and also a volunteer as the Alberta Lead for Canadians for Safe Technology (C4ST), founded and led by former President of Microsoft Canada, Frank Clegg.

You will see from the attached letter that I am not the only teacher concerned about serious multigenerational health risks, but also about the failure of schools to accommodate students and teachers who suffer Electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS), and require accommodations for medical reasons as required by the Canadian Human Rights Act. Some of the largest Teachers' Unions in Canada are calling for a moratorium on WiFi due to peer reviewed health effects. Teachers are being forced into early retirement, or unpaid medical leaves due to adverse effects of powerful industrial strength WiFi systems in schools. Articles from the Canadian Teachers’ Magazine, and the Alberta Teachers’ Association as referenced in exhibit A (below), reinforce that this is an urgent matter that will affect all Canadians and future generations for years to come.

“50+ EMF Safety Tips & Insights”: Overview of Cell Phone & Wireless Technology Hazards

Don’t Fly Planes with Wi-Fi Says EMF Health Advocate
by Jack O'Dwyer, odwyerpr.com, 26 April 2016

Avoid airlines with in-flight wireless, says EMF health advocate Camilla Rees, who notes an airline is a “metal cage” and is “an especially high risk environment for radiation.” One airline providing on-board Wi-Fi is Delta.

The small windows don’t do much to dispel the radiation, she notes in a list of 54 “safety tips and insights” that is the most complete discussion of this topic that we have seen. She is the founder of Electromagnetic Health.

Lloyd Burrell of electricsense.com, explains why cellphones are especially dangerous in metal enclosures such as cars.

“Using your cell phone in your car is dangerous and not just because it can cause an accident,” he writes. “There’s also a direct effect on your health.

“The radio frequency radiation from your cell phone reflected back by the car’s metallic structure magnifies the radiation. It’s called the Faraday cage effect. Would you consider sticking your head in a microwave oven when it’s turned on? I don’t think so.

Media blackout grows: The Huffington Post pulls Vaxxed movie review

(NaturalHealth365) The censorship continues to grow for the documentary, “Vaxxed: From Cover-up to Catastrophe,” with the online news aggregator and blog site The Huffington Post removing a long-time contributor’s review of the film. HuffPo contributor Lance Simmens says he had recently submitted his article only to find it had been removed a short time later. Later, Simmens discovered he could no longer access his account. (so much for ‘freedom of speech’)

Note: As of this article’s publication date: Simmens account has just been restored – but his review of the Movie is still being blocked from publication at The Huffington Post. Here’s the article called “Why Our Children Should Hate Us.”

In his column, Simmens described the documentary as a “must see” film. He expressed hope it could serve as a catalyst for a national discussion on the role of mandatory vaccines for children as well as the role big pharma plays in government decision making.

Re:  "Fighting against mobile phone antennas" ("Montée au front contre les antennes mobiles" - 24 heures, 12 April 2016)

Thank you to the author for her excellent article on mobile antennas which includes the warning by Doctors in Favor of the Environment (MfE) regarding health risks of mobile phones.  The fact that the limit values, based solely on thermal effects (and not biological), are ten times lower in Switzerland compared to other countries in Europe does not make electromagnetic (EM) pollution safer.  In the magazine published in January 2016 by CSS Insurance, the president of MfE, Dr. Peter Kälin, asserts:  "More and more evidence suggests that electromagnetic pollution, even below the limit values, is harmful to health."

The increase in limit values will encourage use of mobile phones and fatten the profits of telecommunications companies.  In fact, isn't the purpose of this action to power the economy?  What about the health of the population?

A $3 Trillion Market in 2020: 3 Sectors You Need to Watch
by Chris Neiger, (TMFNewsie), fool.com,
17 April 2016

The Internet of Things will touch nearly every industry and offers massive opportunities for investors.

Less than four years from now, there will be tens of billions of things connected to the Internet. I'm not just talking about computers, tablets, or smartphones, either. I'm talking about manhole covers, jet engines, conveyor belts in factories, plants, and even cows.

It's called the Internet of Things (IoT), or the Internet of Everything, and it's more than just a passing technology fad. In fact, all of those things I just listed above are already being connected to the Internet. Some farmers are tracking their cows via the Internet, through chips implanted in their ears. And manufacturers are keeping an eye on conveyor belts via sensors connected to the Internet to make sure equipment doesn't overheat.

Kids going CROSS-EYED after spending too much time on smart phones
by Zoie O'Brien, express.co.uk, 21 April 2016

SMART-PHONES are making children go cross-eyed, new research has found.

Researchers in South Korea have confirmed most parents' fears with their research which has concluded time spent on phones can be seriously damaging.

Youngsters who excessively use their phones are at greater risk of temporary convergent strabismus - or going 'cross-eyed' the new study says.

Experts at Chonnam National University Hospital, Seoul, found a link between the two after examining 12 children, aged seven to 16, who used their phones for four to eight hours a day.

Extremely Low Frequency Electromagnetic Fields Facilitate Vesicle Endocytosis by Increasing Presynaptic Calcium Channel Expression at a Central Synapse

Extremely Low Frequency Electromagnetic Fields Facilitate Vesicle Endocytosis by Increasing Presynaptic Calcium Channel Expression at a Central Synapse

Abstract

Accumulating evidence suggests significant biological effects caused by extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMF). Although exo-endocytosis plays crucial physical and biological roles in neuronal communication, studies on how ELF-EMF regulates this process are scarce. By directly measuring calcium currents and membrane capacitance at a large mammalian central nervous synapse, the calyx of Held, we report for the first time that ELF-EMF critically affects synaptic transmission and plasticity. Exposure to ELF-EMF for 8 to 10 days dramatically increases the calcium influx upon stimulation and facilitates all forms of vesicle endocytosis, including slow and rapid endocytosis, endocytosis overshoot and bulk endocytosis, but does not affect the RRP size and exocytosis. Exposure to ELF-EMF also potentiates PTP, a form of short-term plasticity, increasing its peak amplitude without impacting its time course. We further investigated the underlying mechanisms and found that calcium channel expression, including the P/Q, N, and R subtypes, at the presynaptic nerve terminal was enhanced, accounting for the increased calcium influx upon stimulation. Thus, we conclude that exposure to ELF-EMF facilitates vesicle endocytosis and synaptic plasticity in a calcium-dependent manner by increasing calcium channel expression at the nerve terminal.

He denied the charges.

Show Me the Bodies: A Monumental Public Health Failure

"The situation now posed by cellphones and wireless transmitting devices around the world appears eerily reminiscent of what has transpired with tobacco, asbestos, and air pollution. A brave young 21-year-old woman from eastern Pennsylvania, Tiffany Frantz has come forward with the story of her own rare cancerous breast tumors that formed right under the antennae of the cellphone she kept in her bra."

Show me the bodies:  a monumental public health failure

by Devra Davis, Oxford Bibliographies in Environmental Science, 18 April 2016

In the 21st century, “show-me-the-bodies” seems a cruel and outdated foundation for public policy. Yet history is littered with examples—like tobacco and asbestos—where only after the death toll mounts is the price of inaction finally understood to exceed that of action. In 19th century England, women factory inspectorate workers’ warnings about crippling lung disease in teenagers working with asbestos were ignored until evidence of the epidemic toll of factory work became overwhelming more than a half century later. Modern parallels are very much with us. Lung cancer in a young Chinese girl who grew up in a polluted urban environment and breast cancer in a 21-year-old young woman who kept her cell phone in her bras are stunning indications of modern hazards where we cannot afford to wait for broader public impacts before reining in exposures.

France: Smart Meter Row Heads to Court

Smart meter row heads to court
connexionfrance.com, 19 April 2016

ELECTRICITY company ERDF is taking a Seine-et-Marne town to court over its decision to prohibit the installation of ‘smart’ Linky electricity meters.

ERDF, a subsidiary of EDF that manages the public electricity distribution network, said that it had taken the ‘exceptional’ decision to seek a legal ruling from the tribunal administratif de Melun because it believes that towns do not have the authority to ban the company from installing the meters.

In December, councillors in Varennes-sur-Seine voted against allowing the meters pending ‘more complete results on constraints, hazards and risks’ particularly in relation to electromagnetic waves. Le Parisien reports.

Victims of HPV Vaccine in Japan Will Sue State and Vaccine Makers Merck and GlaxoSmithKline

Victims of HPV Vaccine in Japan Will Sue State and Vaccine Makers
by Rishma Parpia, thevaccinereaction.org,
13 April 2016

In the U.S., the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine has been a subject of controversy from the very beginning after Merck’s Gardasil vaccine was licensed in 2006.1 Japan is one of the many nations raising concerns about HPV vaccine following persistent reports that girls are suffering severe adverse effects after getting vaccinated.2

Controversy Surrounding Safety of HPV Vaccine in Japan

Here is what happened in Japan in a nutshell. In December 2010, the HPV vaccine (both Merck’s Gardasil and Cervarix manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline) was provided at no cost to Japanese girls between the ages of 12-16 years old. In April 2013, the vaccine was officially included in Japan’s national immunization program. However, two months later, Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare publically announced that it had decided to withdraw its HPV vaccine recommendation.3 The decision was in response to numerous reports that formerly healthy vaccine recipients were experiencing alarming side effects ranging from short-term memory loss to paralysis.4 In October 2013, a special taskforce was formed to investigate the side effects of the HPV vaccine.5

Children’s Hospital, the Third Largest Pediatric Center in the United States, Fails to Live Up to Mission

Following is first an extract from an article by Jack O'Dwyer, then a full article about Children's of Alabama, the third largest pediatric center in the U.S., which is not living up to its promise of educating about children's health, totally neglecting to mention anything about the dangers of Wi-Fi and other radiation.

Children’s Hospital Fails to Live Up to Mission
by Jack O'Dwyer, odwyerpr.com, 12 April 2016

Children’s of Alabama, a major pediatric center, is not living up to its promise to educate about children’s health because there is nothing about the dangers of Wi-Fi and other radiation on its website but plenty about lightning, bike safety and poison snakes.

The mission statement of the third largest pediatric center in the U.S. says it is to “provide the finest pediatric health services to all children in an environment that fosters excellence in research and medical education. Children’s will be an advocate for all children and work to educate the public about issues affecting children's health and well-being.”

The Microwave Drug: The Biological and Spiritual Effects of Electromagnetic Radiation

"Currently there is no recognition of microwave radiation as an environmental pollutant and one of multiple environmental factors contributing to health deterioration... This is the year to demand telcos turn down the ‘volume’ on the antenna tower in your suburb, reject smart meters and share awareness on the topic with local council, state and federal parliamentarians, school parent and teacher groups and friends. We went mainstream with the airing of an ABC Catalyst episode ‘Wi-Fried’. Word is getting out on this topic!"

The Microwave Drug: The Biological and Spiritual Effects of Electromagnetic Radiation
by Benjamin Nowland, Guest Writer for Wake Up World, 11 April 2016

The 1998 US Army document ‘Bioeffects of Selected Nonlethal Weapons’ says “investigators are even beginning to describe similarities between microwave irradiation and drugs regarding their effects on biological systems. For example, some suggest that power density and specific absorption rate (SAR) of microwave irradiation may be thought of as analogous to the concentration of the injection solution and the dosage of a drug.” [1]

And, as the ‘volume’ or power density is turned up on microwave transmissions, with increased antenna towers, Wi-Fi, Wi-MAX, mobiles etc., we now receive a microwave dose often millions of times higher than what was studied 20 years ago.

Switzerland: Doctors Want to Protect Children from Mobile Phone Radiation

Doctors in Favor of the Environment is creating a storm

are still developing.
Doctors want to protect children from mobile phone radiation
by Nikolai Thelitz, 20 Minutes, 13 April 2016 (Google translation from German, with grammatical corrections)

In Parliament, the pressure to allow more cell towers is growing. Doctors warn of health effects, particularly in children.

The Swiss mobile network  is reaching its limit due to massive increase in data flow. According to provider information, 6,000 out of a total of around 15,000 mobile base stations are already at the limit of permissible radiation levels. A motion of the telecommunications industry asks for immediate increase in the limit values. The Federal Council recommends adopting the motion. The Parliament must also vote on it.

The association, Doctors in Favor of the Environment (Aefu) is creating a storm over these plans: "Attempts in parliament through lobbying are being made to increase the limit values for mobile base stations in Switzerland," says Aefu Director Martin Forter. He warns of the dangers of cell phone radiation. This could affect brain waves and cerebral blood flow, reduce sperm quality and destabilize genetic information. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified mobile phone radiation as possibly carcinogenic. Therefore, Forter calls for : "No increase in the limit values for mobile communications equipment." Fetuses, infants, children, and adolescents are particularly vulnerable because their bodies and brains are still developing.

Cultivation of Strawberries

REPOSTED 31 May 2013:

Image:  Dragonfly Earth Medicine
Imported strawberries are still appearing in supermarkets in Switzerland from February.  It's not certain that working conditions in Spain have improved all that much since this article was written in April 2011.  There is certainly a very serious environmental crisis:  the strawberry fields are sucking dry the area of Spain where most of the "red gold" fruit is cultivated.  Switzerland imports most of its out-of-season strawberries from Spain. This fruit is cultivated in vitro in central Spain then transported south for planting in soil sterilized by a chemical substance which Saddam Hussein used to kill populations in Kurdistan. The plants are grown on plastic which is dispersed into the environment or burned after harvest. The cultivation of strawberries requires enormous amounts of pesticides which contaminate drinking water and fresh water in a natural reserve for migratory birds. Most of the strawberry field workers are women who are poorly paid and live in unsanitary conditions. Many suffer from respiratory diseases and skin infections caused by exposure to the pesticides used to cultivate the strawberries.

Dominique Belpomme, cancérologue : “70% to 90% of Cancers Thought to be Linked to the Environment”
Interview by Weronika Zarachowicz, telerama.fr, 6 April 2016
(translated from French - see translator's note at end of article)

Cancer, obesity, allergies, behavioral disorders... The increase in these maladies is to a great extent  due to the degradation of our environment, warns the oncologist, Dominique Belpomme.  Staggering, frightening, however possibly reversible.

What is the share of environmental factors in the continued increase in cancer? What is the role of ecology in contemporary medicine? For over ten years, the oncologist Dominique Belpomme, former member of the "Cancer Committee" of public assistance, and now director of ECERI (European Cancer and Environment Research Institute) in Brussels, makes us aware of the links between health and environment. In his new book, published 6 April, How Diseases Are Born (Comment naissent les maladies, ed. Les liens qui libèrent), he broadens even more the scope of his research and calls for a profound change in our health system (and thinking!) . For now, he says, there is no doubt about the environmental causes of most modern diseases, be it cancer, obesity, allergies, behavioral disorders or emerging diseases such as electrohypersensitivity ...

[When will doctors acknowledge that the skin problems might be caused by more than just a reaction to nickel, like burns from exposure to radiofrequency radiation emitted by "smart" wearables like fitness trackers and other wireless devices?]

Electronic Devices, Wearable Technology May Trigger Nickel Allergies
by Dr. Mallika Marshall, boston.cbslocal.com,
8 April 2016

BOSTON (CBS) — Nickel allergies are fairly common, and for most people, the problem can be traced to jewelry.

A red, itchy rash prompted Sue McCann to go see her dermatologist. She was surprised that it was caused by the nickel in her fitness tracker.
Her dermatologist, Dr. Laura Ferris, is seeing more patients with similar problems.

“Traditionally, we’ve seen nickel allergies in (objects) like earrings, or from belt buckles, but now we are tending to see it a lot on the wrist from electronic fitness trackers,” she says.

One popular model was recalled after thousands of people complained of skin irritations. Nickel was found in the casing.

How To Hardwire Your IPad, IPod, And IPhone

How To Hardwire Your IPad, IPod, And IPhone
by Andrea Fabry, ehtrust.org

Our family has transitioned from wireless to wired. Here’s how how to hardwire your iPad, iPod, and iPhone and other favorite devices safely to the Ethernet.

Transitioning from wireless to wired has been more of a journey than a decision. Our home was not wired for Ethernet, thus we had to learn to live with the inconvenience of cables running throughout the house. I wouldn’t trade the peace of mind, however, and my three teens have adapted well. Especially once we corded their favorite devices!

With a little ingenuity and a few supplies, you’ll be able to enjoy your devices without the added burden of wireless frequencies.

Burnt by a Mobile Phone Mast

Diana Boughton
Diana Boughton - Burnt By a Phone Mast
by Dave Ashton, 8 April 2016
(Warning: Some of the articles linked to below contain graphic images)

Diana is a member of the UK Electrosensitives group on Facebook, and she has bravely decided to publicise the shocking rash - or burn? - that she developed while staying close to a mobile mast / cell tower. Usually, there isn't much to see when it comes to electrosensitivity sufferers - the damage is internal, and hidden away - but this is definitely not true in Diana's case.

Her rash seems to be consistent with the rashes and burns experienced by some owners of other wireless devices, such as mobile phones, wearable fitness monitors, smart watches, laptops and tablets, and even virtual reality headsets. In fact, there is a legal action currently underway against Fitbit for this sort of "unexplained" skin damage.

In Diana's case though, it was proximity to a mobile mast that produced the rash.

This is what she says on her website:

Why I’m Not a Fitbit Fan
by Sarah, The Healthy Home Economist

A Fitbit is a type of electronic device used for personal activity tracking. These wireless-enabled, wearable devices measure data such as the number of steps walked, quality of sleep, and other personal metrics.

The Fitbit was developed by the company of the same name founded and managed by James Park and Eric Friedman.

Since then, a proliferation of various styles and models have taken the workout world by storm with Fitbits and similar knock off devices crafted for every personality and need.

The very simple Fitbit Zip, which is about the size of a quarter, tracks only steps taken, distance traveled, and calories burned. The sophisticated Fitbit Flex, which is worn 24 hours a day even while showering and swimming, tracks all its wearer’s movement including sleep patterns.

There are Fitbit apps for the iPhone and Android too which allow fans to log their food, activities, water intake, and weight, as well as track their fitness goals throughout the day even while offline.
While the Fitbit and devices like them may seem like a very helpful tool to keep people motivated and moving toward exercise goals, I don’t personally use one nor do I recommend them to folks that ask me about them. Here are my reasons.

Electromagnetic Radiation: A Modern Health Hazard?

How Common is EHS?  "Many children are currently affected, but undiagnosed. Children are likely to be more vulnerable to developing EHS since their exposure is higher and outcomes may be worse given their developing systems and greater time for latent effects. Brain tumours have overtaken leukaemia as a leading cause of death in children (both are associated with EMF exposure). There is evidence that genetic damage caused by exposure within current guidelines may not only damage the exposed child, but could also damage their offspring."

Electromagnetic Radiation: A Modern Health Hazard?

by Dr. Erica Mallery Blythe, camexpo.co.uk, 5 April 2016

We are currently witnessing the largest change to the Earth’s electromagnetic environment that has ever taken place in human history. Given that basic household electricity, which was the first anthropogenic (man-made) electromagnetic field (EMF), only became prolific during the twentieth century, artificial EMF has barely seen one generation from cradle to grave. The use of higher frequency microwave devices such as mobile telephony, Wi-Fi and smart meters, have suddenly become commonplace, despite serious health concerns. Could this be the greatest public health disaster in human history?

Dr. Ira Chopra, Consultant Eye Surgeon, Paras Hospitals writes on how our eyes face a rising health threat with an inevitable switch to modern lighting techniques and increased usage of digital devices

The effects of harmful Ultra Violet Radiation on the health of skin and eyes have been well documented and much talked about in recent years. However, researchers today have identified that ultra violet light is not the only harmful component of light when it comes to visual health. The Blue Violet spectrum of visible light is another component that has the potential to cause damage to retinal cells of the eyes. In fact, researchers have coined a new term to describe the danger this light spectrum presents to critical structures within the eye. They call it "blue light hazard".

- Some users have also reported feeling nauseous and woozy

The first gamers to get their hands on the full Oculus Rift have noticed embarrassing side-effects to wearing Facebook's virtual reality headset.

While the $599 (£417) gadget may immerse them in realistic fantasy scenes, it has left some users with red-faced - literally.

The awkward marks have been dubbed 'Oculus face' or 'Rift rash' and are part of the perils of the innovative technology.

Argentina Seeks National Law Against Electromagnetic Pollution

Argentina seeks a national law against electromagnetic pollution
Nuevo Chronista, 28 March 2016

BUENOS AIRES:
Bill limits maximum levels of radiation and mandates wired connections in schools and hospitals. Siting of transmitters will require public consultation. Mercedes Party members behind the scenes.

"In Argentina's House of Representatives, a bill was introduced to prevent, reduce, control and impose penalties on electromagnetic pollution. Called "Minimum premises for prevention and control of electromagnetic pollution", it was introduced by Representative Gabriela Trioano and co-sponsored by Carlos Rubín, Diana Conti and Carolina Gailard. It is supported by many NGOs, unions and neighborhood organizations."

The project aims to provide a regulatory framework to "radio infrastructure with radiant systems, antennas and all installations capable of generating electromagnetic radiation" in order to "ensure the protection of public health" considering "both thermal effects and biological".  In education and health facilities only wired connections to data networks and Internet access may be used. In hospitals phones may not be used in areas that health authorities have higher health risk.

While laptops have brought a plethora of resources to the fingertips of students, educators remain concerned about their use as tools of distraction.  "The problem is maturity," Mr Baker [St Paul's Catholic College principal] said. "They are very good at using technology for social interaction but not for learning."

'The reality is that technology is doing more harm than good in our schools' says education chief
by Eryk Bagshaw, Education Reporter, smh.com.au, 1st April 2016

Private, Catholic and public schools are reducing their reliance on laptops and tablets following a damning international assessment and concerns over the impact of social media on learning.

"The reality is that technology is doing more harm than good in our schools today," the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's education chief Andreas Schleicher told world leaders at a global education forum this month.

Last week, John Vallance, the principal of one of Sydney's most expensive private schools, Sydney Grammar, said that laptops were not necessary in class and that more traditional teaching methods were more effective.

At a recent yoga class in Rishikesh, India, the professed “world capital of yoga,” a startling smattering of sounds bounced against the ashram walls: the chirp of a text message, the “swoosh” of an email sent, the ping of a Facebook update.

Digitally distracted yogis are to be expected in the pricey yoga studios of New York and LA, but this was Parmarth Niketan, the largest ashram in Rishikesh and one of many ashrams in the area that has long banked on promoting itself as a restorative retreat from the din of the West. What's more, this scene played out during the International Yoga Festival, a gathering of an estimated 1,200 yogis from around the world, many of them seeking a sense of self, and silence from their gadgets.

Geneva: Electrosensitive Persons at the University Hospital (HUG)

Reading this comment, you will see that there are no special provisions being made at HUG for treating electrohypersensitive persons.  In fact, improvements probably need to be made to provide better care for persons with other disabilities.  Following this comment is the introduction to a 2011 report on electrohypersensitivity, a summary of which can be found on the Website of the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (BAFU).

Professor Arnaud Perrier and Séverine Lalive Raemy
believe that part of being attentive to the needs of all
patients includes providing better care for handicapped
persons.
Electrosensitive persons at Geneva's university hospital (HUG)
by Meris Michaels, Readers' Mail, Tribune de Genève, 2 April 2016

If one wants to "promote care" of handicapped persons at HUG, places free of electromagnetic (EM) waves should be created to treat electrosensitive persons (estimated to be 5% of the population). These persons, sensitive to the radiation emitted by Wi-Fi and other wireless technologies, cannot be treated at hospitals because this type of radiation saturates treatment rooms and even patient rooms. Everyone could become electrosensitive.

In the January 2016 magazine published by CSS Insurance, the president of Doctors for the Protection of the Environment, Dr. Peter Källin, states: "More and more evidence suggests that electromagnetic pollution, even below the limit values, is harmful to health." Dr. Källin criticizes the fact that the population is often insufficiently informed about the way to use these new means of communication in order to reduce electromagnetic pollution.

Ban Wi-Fi Movement Persists

"Across Europe, a movement to ban cell phones exists, and some nations like France already ban them from nursery schools and day care... to prevent any remote possibility that electromagnetic radiation emitted by wireless devices might cause cancers or affect children's brains.... In the U.S., a movement against WiFi has much less momentum. The group entitled “Parents Against Wi-Fi in School,” for example, has around 2,300 likes. 'This page supports a healthier home and learning environment for children through the removal of currently mandated sources of radiofrequency radiation (RFR) exposure.' ”

Despite lack of scientific evidence, Ban Wi-Fi movement persists

The debate might not matter for school admins, as districts can still be sued regardless

According to proponents of a movement against in-school Wi-Fi, the technology has significant health impacts on some students. Though it's a matter of debate, the answer to whether the movement is grounded in science might not matter for school administrators: Districts can still be sued regardless of whether claims hold water.

Last December, a 15-year-old named Jenny Fry committed suicide in her native England. Fry's mother told the press that her daughter had suffered from a severely debilitating allergy caused by electromagnetic hypersensitivity syndrome. EHS is a condition in which electromagnetic radiation emitted from wireless technology, including Wi-Fi, cell phones and cell towers causes incapacitating physical symptoms.

For Fry, symptoms reportedly included blinding headaches, fatigue, concentration problems, and bladder issues. “Fry had shared information about Wi-Fi’s potential problems with the head teacher of Jenny’s school, Simon Duffy, but according to Fry, Duffy told her there was an equal amount of information that shows Wi-Fi is harmless,” Yahoo News reported on the case.

Belgium: Constitutional Court Backs Raised Radiofrequency Exposure Limit to Facilitate Deployment of 4G

"The Brussels Minister of Environment, Celine Fremault, expressed “great satisfaction” with the judgment."

Constitutional Court backs raised limit to support Brussels 4G deployment
gsma.com, 25 February 2016

The Constitutional Court in Belgium has ruled against a challenge to the decision of the Brussels government to raise the allowed radiofrequency exposure levels to facilitate deployment of 4G services in the Brussels Capital region.

In the 27 January judgment the Court found that the Parliament of the Brussels region had not shown a misunderstanding of the precautionary principle by relaxing the exposure levels as even the new levels were well below the recommended standards internationally.
