Meeting at the European Parliament

On 8 February 2017, the working group composed of Mr. Etienne Riondet, lawyer and secretary of ARTAC, Mr. Olivier Cachard, Professor of law at the University of Nancy and member of the Administrative Council of ARTAC, and Mrs. Marie-Odile Bertella Geoffroy, lawyer, former judge specializing in environmental issues and also member of the Administrative Council of ARTAC, as well as Professor Dominique Belpomme met at the European Parliament in Brussels with the European Deputy Michèle Rivasi, the former European Deputy and former president of the Green Party at the European Parliament Paul Lannoye, and the parliamentary team of European Deputy Eva Jolie. Also present were the Italian judge Antonino Abrami and his assistant.

The purpose of this meeting was to prepare the insertion into the Statute of Rome of an amendment considering the degradation of the environment and pollution as health crimes.

Deputy Michèle Rivasi proposed to pass the draft to the European Parliament in Brussels. She has moreover emphasized that the year 2017 will mark the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, establishing the European Community. This could be an opportunity to report on the initiative of the working group whose purpose is to raise awareness of pollution as a crime against health.

Aerotoxic syndrome: a new and still unknown pathology

Given its expertise in the field of environmental toxins, ARTAC has been solicited to study this syndrome. It is a new pathology, affecting in particular cabin personnel (pilots, stewards, air hostesses). The illness results from inhalation of contaminated air in the pilots' cabin and in the whole passenger area. It is characterized by damage to the brain and spinal cord. The intoxication comes from contamination of the air through pollutants generated in the course of heating of oils used for airplane engines. This study could form part of the collaboration with the Pasteur Institute.
